Hidden Gem: Azelaic Acid - Tip of the Day 8-12-22
I recently visited my dermatologist to get my monthly scalp shots for alopecia. While I’m in her office, I try to get as much skincare “scoop” as I can. She let me know about what may be one of skincare’s best kept secrets - especially if you struggle with acne or redness. If this is you, consult your dermatologist to see if azelaic acid is right for you.

Azelaic acid is a gentle exfoliating ingredient with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It’s commonly recommended for rosacea because it can calm swelling and redness. It also fights acne causing bacteria and stops keratin from clogging pores.
Azelaic acid also offers antioxidant benefits, fighting free radicals to help you look more radiant and youthful. It’s a mild acid, making it tolerable for most people. People with sensitive skin might experience mild tingling, or dryness after applying azelaic acid. Experts say this usually subsides after a week or two.
You can find over-the-counter products containing azelaic acid. Your dermatologist can also prescribe azelaic acid creams or gels.
Bonus tip: Because azelaic acid is an exfoliating ingredient, be intentional about wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen when using it! Experts don’t recommend doing a deep cleanse, or physically exfoliating before using azelaic acid.
