Intestinal Shower Hydration Hack: Tip of the Day 8-26-22

Staying hydrated can feel like a struggle, especially as we get older. Because hydration is key for so many selfcare issues (gut health, skin, hair, brain function, muscle recovery, ect), I’m all for a good hydrating tip. TikTokers are raving about a viral drink that experts say might help your body hydrate better.

The MVP of this concoction is the chia seed. Chia seeds hold 10-12 times their weight in water. Researchers say H2O molecules layer upon one another and turn into a gel. It is in that form that's found in nature, and it's also in that form that's found within our cells. Drinking it in this form is incredibly hydrating to the body, more so than drinking water alone. Adding lemon gives more of a detoxing element.

A few things to know if you’re interested in “showering your intestines”. Experts say you don’t have to add lemon, which is acidic, to enjoy the hydration benefits of this drink. If you do add lemon, drink it through a straw and rinse afterward to avoid damage to your tooth enamel.

Dieticians say “intestinal showers” are not for everyone. For one, chia seeds turn into a slime consistency when added to water. That’s enough for some to pass on it. Also, if you have gastrointestinal issues, the fiber in chia seeds can make you bloated if you eat too many.

If you’re still on board, here’s how to make an “intestinal shower” drink:

  • Mix 2 tablespoons of chia seeds and 6 ounces of water

  • Stir right away so the chia seeds don't form chunks

  • Let it sit for 5-10 minutes

  • Add juice from half of a squeezed lemon

  • Drink immediately
