See a Dermatologist for hair loss: Tip of the Day 5-2-22
It’s natural to want to call your cosmetologist for any issue concerning your hair. But, if your issue is significant thinning or balding hair, you should first call a dermatologist.
Both dermatologists and cosmetologists can help people improve their outer appearance. But knowing the difference in when to call a doctor is important. Cosmetologists are not physicians. They specialize in haircutting, hair styling, and hair health. Your stylist may do a wonderful job styling your hair to hide hair loss, which is great while you’re receiving medical treatment to address the hair loss. A dermatologist can target specific areas of hair loss with prescription treatments or steroid shots, and in many instances, re-grow your hair. I’ve personally had steroid shot treatments to regrow hair loss caused by alopecia.
In some cases, reversing hair loss is time-sensitive. The sooner you see a dermatologist, the better the odds of seeing quicker improvements.
Re-growing hair takes months, so by all means, see your cosmetologist to find a style that makes you feel beautiful while receiving treatment from your dermatologist.
