Skip shaving before your pedi: Tip of the Day 9-29-22

It's natural to want to shave your legs before getting a pedicure. But just because it feels right doesn't mean it is right.

The idea of your nail tech rubbing lotion on hairy or prickly legs might seem cringey... but, it's very likely they don't care. Most importantly, skipping the shave helps protect you from some potentially serious infections like staphylococcus aureus, hepatitis, athlete's foot, and warts. If bacteria, fungi, or viruses are lurking in an improperly cleaned pedicure tub, any cut or broken skin puts you at risk.

There is no way to truly know how clean a basin is when you put your feet in it, even if it looks clean. The jets in the whirlpool bath can harbor bacteria and fungus. I'm not trying to ruin a good time. Enjoy your pedicure, but if you're concerned about having hairy legs, wait 24 hours after shaving before soaking in the salon pedicure chair. You can even take your own file and pumice stone if you suspect unsanitary practices.

Bonus tip: Make sure you dry the spaces in between your toes once they’re out of the water. The moisture in those areas is where organisms like fungi and bacteria tend to grow.
